RUNNING WINS SUPER SEDAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Twenty-year-old Drury driver, Dayne Running, won the 2007/2008 Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series at Taupo Motorsport Park today after the title race came down to the very last race of the season. Running brought his Chev Camaro through the field in the final race of the seven-round series to place third, one spot behind major series rival Glen Brazier of Invercargill, to clinch the championship with 363 points - just six ahead of Brazier.
Brazier had arrived at Taupo nine points behind Running and did everything he could to snatch the title. On Saturday he qualified fastest and won the opening race before winning again in this morning's scratch race. He then hustled his Chev Corvette to second place in this afternoon's final, a handicap event. However Running stayed close to his rival all weekend, finishing one place behind him in all three races to take the series.
"It was a tight season and I'm glad I was able to clinch the championship," said Running after seven months of competition. "Up until the third round it was perfect. Then we had a slump but we came back." Reflecting on the final round he said, "the main goal was to keep it on the track and bring home the series." He paid tribute to Brazier's effort. "Glen drove very well," he said.
Although he has only recently turned twenty, Running has a huge amount of motorsport experience. He started in Kiwi Kidz Quarter Midgets at the age of twelve, racing at tracks such
as Western Springs with much success before competing in the Winter Series at Manfeild Park in a Formula First at the age of fifteen. There he finished fourth overall as he made the transition from dirt to seal. He then moved to Star Touring Cars and then to the 2005/06 V8 Development Series where he became rookie of the year with several race wins and lap records on his way to fourth overall in the series. After having his first taste of the Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series at last season's final round this was Running's first full year in the championship.
Brazier was also having his first full year in the series, finishing the season as runner-up and winning the same number of races as Running during the season.
Peter Stewart of Te Puke wrapped up third place in the championship in his Cortina- Chev with 281 points while Paul Wilton of Mangonui in Northland was fourth, just two points further back. Blair McDonald of Waimauku was fifth with Ross Calgher and the previous champion Grant Brennan tied for sixth place followed by Silverdale driver Justin McIlroy.
Brazier set the pace in qualifying with a lap of 1 minute 36.7 seconds to head off Running and Aucklanders Wayne Conder in a Chev Camaro and Craig Corliss in a Supercharged VE Commodore V8. Wellington driver, 22-year-old Stuart Bovey, was next in the new 5.4 litre Chev V8 powered Jaguar XKR driven on it's debut at the previous round by his father Kevin. Brazier then took a convincing win in Saturday afternoon's race ahead of Running with Tauranga driver Andy Greenslade third in his Chev Corvette and Corliss fourth.
This morning's scratch race also went to Brazier who again led home Running with Brennan third and Greenslade fourth. It was an eventful race with Stuart Bovey doing a fine job in the Jaguar to repeatedly challenge Brennan while Ross Calgher broke a stub axle in his Dodge Viper.
It was fitting that the outgoing champion, Grant Brennan of Tauranga, won the final race of the series. Brazier and Running crossed the line in the handicap event second and third respectively. The race was a good one to end the season with Corliss having another good run and Bovey again showing well to come from near the back of the field to finish eighth.
However after a long season it was Dayne Running who prevailed after some fantastic racing in this exciting class.

SUPER SEDAN SERIES GOES TO THE WIRE
Invercargill driver Glen Brazier won the opening race of the final round of the 2007/2008 Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series at Taupo Motorsport Park today to ensure the championship battle will go right to the final day of the season tomorrow.
Brazier, who arrived in Taupo just nine points behind series leader Dayne Running of Drury, started the day by setting the quickest time in qualifying in his Chev Corvette with a lap of 1 minute 36.7 seconds. Running, in a Chev Camaro, was second fastest with a time of 1 minute 38 seconds. Auckland drivers Wayne Conder (Chev Camaro) and Craig Corliss (Supercharged VE Commodore V8) were third and fourth respectively with 22-year-old Stuart Bovey of Wellington next in the new 5.4 litre Chev V8 powered Jaguar XKR driven on it's debut at the previous round by his father Kevin.
Today's first race of the weekend was a handicap event and Brazier came from the back of the field to get amongst the frontrunners at the midway point of the race. After taking the lead he went on to take a convincing win. While the victory closed the gap to Running in the point standings ever so slightly the Drury based driver ensured he retained the championship lead by crossing the line in second place this afternoon.
Both Brazier and Running recorded lap times within a whisker of each other as they hauled their way through the field. Tauranga driver Andy Greenslade made a welcome return to the series bringing his Chev Corvette home in third place with Corliss fourth.
The race featured some tremendous battles right throughout the field.
The series will now be decided tomorrow as the competitors face a rolling start, scratch race tomorrow morning with another handicap event to follow in the afternoon.
The weather today was cool but dry after extremely wet conditions for Friday's practice sessions at the circuit. However due to the cool conditions and an alteration to one of the corners on the 3.33 kilometre circuit lap times today were some four to five seconds off those recorded when the series last visited the track in October.
Major sponsor of the series, Schaeffer Oil, has primary markets in the fields of earthmoving, trucking and agriculture and they view this series as the perfect test environment for their high performance racing products.

SUPER SEDAN ROUND VICTORY SHARED AT MANFEILD
The 2007/2008 Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series is heading for a tight finish after Glen Brazier and Wayne Conder shared overall victory at the penultimate round at Manfeild Park in Feilding this weekend.
Brazier of Invercargill (Chev Corvette) came to this weekend's round twenty-two points behind championship leader Dayne Running of Drury but after taking a first, second and fifth placing over the three races he shared the round with Conder and closed the points gap to Running with just one round remaining.
Meanwhile Conder of Auckland took a first, third and fourth over the course of the weekend to match Brazier's points haul.
Today's opening race, the second of the weekend, was a rolling start scratch contest held in wet conditions. Current champion Grant Brennan of Tauranga led from start to finish in a superb drive to lead Brazier and Conder across the line with Running fourth in his Camaro. Running was followed across the line by Blair McDonald of Waimauku (Holden HSV Clubsport) and Waitara's Ross Calgher (Dodge Viper).
Unfortunately the wet conditions meant that several drivers were caught without suitable wet tyres and could not start the race.
The final race of the round this afternoon was not declared dry until the last minute and conditions were 50/50 as the cars lined up for the handicap start. Phill Dravitski of Waitara led early before Conder took his Chev Camaro into the lead on the penultimate lap. Running was making good progress, passing five cars on two laps in succession to grab second place on the final lap ahead of Dravitski in his VN Commodore V8. Craig Corliss of Auckland in his 6 litre Supercharged VE Commodore was next followed by Brazier who brought his Corvette through the field on old wet tyres. Meanwhile Brennan found the track too wet for his dry weather set-up and slick tyres and played it carefully near the back of the field. However he still finished the round behind only Brazier and Conder.
On Saturday Brazier had been the fastest qualifier from Running and Brennan before going on to win the opening race later that afternoon. However he had to recover from a tangle with championship rival Running at the first corner of the second lap. The pair touched and Brazier's Corvette was turned around, the two cars ending the incident nose to nose. Brazier was quickly back on track and raced through the field to win from Brennan, Calgher and Conder. Running received a punctured tyre in the melee and limped home at the rear of the field.
Much interest centred on the debut of the new spaceframe Jaguar of Wellington driver Kevin Bovey at this round and despite some minor teething problems the car had a fine debut. After qualifying seventh fastest Bovey brought the car home in an impressive ninth place in Saturday afternoon's handicap race. A lack of wet tyres meant Bovey did not start Sunday morning's wet race while an eighth place later in the day wrapped up the car's first outing.
The final round of the championship will take place at the Taupo Motorsport Centre over the weekend of 10/11 May.

CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS TANGLE AT MANFEILD
The battle in the 2007/2008 Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series has been an extremely close one throughout the season but today at Manfeild Park in Feilding the battle became just a little too close.
Dayne Running of Drury and Glen Brazier of Invercargill have been the two major protagonists in the series title chase since the opening round at Taupo last October. However in the opening race of the penultimate round at Manfeild Park today the duo tangled. As Brazier went around the outside of Running at the first corner of the second lap of today's race the cars touched and ended up facing each other on the track.
The race was a six lap handicap event and Brazier quickly recovered to bring his Chev Corvette through the field to a good win while Running was less lucky, receiving a punctured left front tyre that resulted in him limping home at the rear of the field in his Chev Camaro.
The result has allowed Brazier to close in on Running in the championship after the Drury based driver came to Manfeild with a twenty-two point lead.
Second today was the current champion, Grant Brennan of Tauranga in his Brennan SB2 Corvette with Waitara driver Ross Calgher third in his Dodge Viper. Wayne Conder of Auckland crossed the line fourth in a Chev Camaro.
Earlier in the day Brazier had qualified fastest ahead of Running and Brennan.
Much interest centred on the debut of the new spaceframe Jaguar of Wellington driver Kevin Bovey today and despite some minor teething problems he brought the car home in an impressive ninth place in it's first outing.
The evenly poised championship features two more races at the 3.03 kilometre Manawatu circuit tomorrow, a rolling start scratch race at 11.15am followed by the final race of the round, another handicap event at 3.10pm. The series then moves to the final round at Taupo over the weekend of 10/11 May.
Major sponsor of the series, Schaeffer Oil, has primary markets in the fields of earthmoving, trucking and agriculture and they view this series as the perfect test environment for their high performance racing products.

BRAZIER TAKES PUKEKOHE ROUND OF SUPER SEDAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Glen Brazier of Invercargill won the latest round of the 2007/2008 Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series at Pukekohe Park south of Auckland yesterday.
Brazier, who makes the long trek from Invercargill to contest every round of this North Island based series, took his Chev Corvette to pole position in qualifying and then recorded a win and a second place along with an eighth placing in the opening handicap race. Those efforts secured him fifty-seven points for the round, two more than Aucklander Roger Williams in his Oldsmobile Aurora. Two more Auckland drivers, Mark Heimgartner and Craig Corliss, were third and fourth respectively.
Meanwhile series leader nineteen-year-old Dayne Running of Drury held onto the lead of the championship but endured a difficult day. The gearbox on Running's Chev Camaro let him down in the first race and left him to struggle home in seventeenth place. He was a non-starter in the second race of the day but bounced back well to win the third and final race, a handicap event in which he came through from near the back of the field.
Brazier opened the day by qualifying fastest in the twenty-one car field in a time of 57.116 seconds ahead of Running on 58.613 and Peter Wieser of Auckland in a TVR Chimaera.
The first and third races of each round of the series are handicap events and while Running struggled with his gearbox issues Brazier battled his way through the field to eighth place in the opener. However it was Mark Heimgartner of Dannemora in West Auckland who took the win, bringing his Commodore from the midfield to cross the line ahead of Auckland's Wayne Conder in a Chev Camaro and Waitara driver Ross Calgher in his Dodge Viper. Palmerston North's John Rush was fourth in his Escort V8. Meanwhile, Justin McIlroy, Phill Dravitski, Paul Wilton and fourth fastest qualifier Paul Kirwan all failed to finish the race.
The second race was a rolling start scratch race and Brazier took the victory almost eleven seconds clear of Roger Williams in the Oldsmobile and Wieser. Blair McDonald of
Waimauku in his Clubsport Commodore V8 was fourth ahead of Conder and Heimgartner. Kirwan again failed to finish.
Running was back for the third and final race to win the handicap event from Brazier. Brazier did however record the fastest time of the day as he worked his way from the back, a lap of 56.969 seconds while Running's best was 57.803. Justin McIlroy of Silverdale brought his VT Holden Clubsport V8 home in third place with Aucklander Craig Corliss fourth. Corliss was a happy man at the end of the round after accomplishing his first ever one hundred percent finishing record in the series. Wayne Conder failed to finish this race in his Camaro.
Other drivers to strike trouble during the day were Peter Stewart of Te Puke who had arrived at the round second in the series. However he suffered a suspension problem on the warm-up lap for one of the races and was forced to withdraw while Ross Calgher suffered an engine problem in the Viper, normally one of the most reliable cars in the series.
Major sponsor of the series, Schaeffer Oil, has primary markets in the fields of earthmoving, trucking and agriculture and they view this series as the perfect test environment for their high performance racing products.
The next round of the series, will be held at Manfeild Autocourse in the Manawatu on 29/30 March.

CHANGE OF FORTUNE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS
A change of fortune for the major championship contenders altered the complexion of the 2007/2008 Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series when Round 4 of the series took place at Manfeild in Feilding on Saturday.
Defending champion Grant Brennan of Tauranga won the round in his Brennan SB2 Corvette, lifting himself to fourth place in the championship. However while he enjoyed a successful weekend the two major protaganists in the championship battle, Drury driver Dayne Running and Invercargill's Glen Brazier, had their problems. Although Running's weekend wasn't as successful as his past three outings he had the consolation of leaving Manfeild with an increased championship lead on Saturday night. Nineteen-year-old Running was fifth overall this weekend after winning all three previous rounds. However Brazier, his biggest threat prior to this outing, had a disastrous weekend failing to finish the first two races and then not starting the third. Brazier's horror weekend allowed Te Puke's Peter Stewart to climb to second in the championship ahead of him.
Qualifying saw Brazier start the round well, setting the fastest time in his Corvette with a lap of 1 minute 06.330 seconds, an average speed of 164.450 kilometres per hour around the 3.03 kilometre Manfeild circuit. Championship leader Running was second with a lap of 1 minute 07.887 seconds while Brennan qualified third fastest ahead of the Cortina Chev of Stewart.
The first race, a handicap event over eight laps, was a race of attrition. The weekend turned sour for Brazier when he damaged third gear on the opening lap, putting his Corvette out of the race while Dean Bevan was already out with engine problems in his Commodore. Series newcomer Ernie Stevens of Waitara blew an engine in his V8 Falcon while Mike Parsons and Margaret Goodwin had a coming together at the hairpin, causing Parsons to retire with a damaged rear wheel. Wayne Conder and Peter Stewart also failed to finish.
Meanwhile Running made his way through the carnage, bringing the Camaro through the field to take the lead on the seventh lap to lead Brennan and Waimauku driver Blair McDonald (Clubsport Commodore V8) across the line. Local driver John Rush was fourth in his Escort V8.
The second race was a rolling start event and Running was immediately in trouble when he went off at the end of the back straight on the opening lap. He managed to get going again but on the next lap he went around again at the same corner. That left Brazier in the box seat, leading the race while his series rival was struggling. However on lap five the Corvette blew a diff putting the Southlander out for the rest of the meeting. Brennan assumed the lead and crossed the line ahead of Stewart with Ross Calgher of Waitara third in his Dodge Viper and Blair McDonald fourth. Aucklander Craig Corliss plus those who had suffered problems in the opening race - Bevan, Stevens and Parsons were all non-starters.
The third race was another handicap event and Taranaki driver Phill Dravitski led early in his VN Commodore V8 before Wayne Conder of Auckland, a winner at the last round in his Chev Camaro, took the lead. Conder won by over five seconds from Brennan and Stewart. Running was back in the fray and he brought the Camaro across the line in fourth with Calgher and McDonald rounding out the top six. Brazier had been a non-starter while Corliss and Margaret Goodwin retired during the race.
The next round of the series takes place at Pukekohe Park Raceway, south of Auckland on 2 March.

RUNNING AGAIN IN SUPER SEDAN SERIES
Drury driver Dayne Running continued on his winning way at Round 3 of the Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series at Pukekohe Park Raceway this weekend. Running, the top point scorer at the previous two rounds, won again this weekend to extend his lead in the series. He had qualified his Chev Camaro second fastest on Saturday behind Invercargill driver Glen Brazier and then took a sixth place in the first handicap race yesterday afternoon. This morning Running took the Camaro to second place behind Brazier in a rolling start, scratch grid event and ended the round with a win in the final race, another handicap event this afternoon. In his drive this afternoon Running brought the Camaro from second-to-last in the big field to take the victory.
Brazier and Te Puke driver Peter Stewart in his Mk 5 Cortina Chev finished the weekend tied on points to share second place for the round. After qualifying on pole Brazier found his handicap too severe in Saturday afternoon's first race and brought his Corvette through to eighth place. On Sunday morning he won the scratch race and then in this afternoon's handicap he managed to fight his way to fourth place at the chequered flag. Stewart had an excellent weekend finishing third in this afternoon's handicap race to add to an earlier sixth plus a fifth place yesterday, good enough to equal the southerner's tally.
Meanwhile George Sheweiry of Auckland, having his first outing of the season in his ex-David Steel Chev Camaro, scored a fourth and a fifth placing today to complement his second placing yesterday. Sheweiry amassed enough points to finish fourth in the round.
This morning's eight lap race went to Brazier as he scorched to a new lap record for the class of 56.749 seconds at the 2.84 kilometre South Auckland circuit. Running was second with Aucklander Roger Williams third in his Oldsmobile Aurora. The race featured a nasty incident when defending series champion Grant Brennan of Tauranga spun his Brennan Corvette SB2 in the esses and North Shore driver Greg Gillespie hit the car. Gillespie failed to finish the race while the Saturday race winner Wayne Conder and third fastest
qualifier Andy Greenslade were also among the non-finishers.
The final race this afternoon saw another great race with Running doing a fine job to make his way through the traffic to win. Waitara driver Ross Calgher in his Dodge Viper was second with Stewart third in the Cortina. The first five cars across the line were separated by less than six seconds at the chequered flag providing a great spectacle for the crowd.
Andy Greenslade had an altercation with the Nissan of Nigel Snow during the race sending the Greenslade Mustang spinning down the back straight, fortunately without making contact with anything.
Auckland driver Wayne Conder won the opening race on Saturday in his Chev Camaro from Sheweiry. Orewa driver Mike Parsons was third in his Ford Falcon V8. The fastest qualifiers, Glen Brazier of Invercargill, championship leader Dayne Running of Drury plus Tauranga drivers Andy Greenslade and Grant Brennan found their handicaps too tough to overcome with Running faring best with a sixth place.
Greg Gillespie and Mark Heimgartner both had spins during the race, fortunately without damage.
The series resumes in the New Year when Round 4 takes place at Manfeild Autocourse in Feilding over the weekend of 2/3 February.
Major sponsor of the series, Schaeffer Oil, has primary markets in the fields of earthmoving, trucking and agriculture and they view this series as the perfect test environment for their high performance racing products.
